Panel Recommends Gov. Markell Grant a Pardon

Posted:

DOVER, Del. – A state panel is recommending that Gov. Jack Markell give pardon to a man convicted of health care fraud years ago.

Sachin Karnik pleaded guilty to felony fraud that involved false Medicaid claims in 2006. He was sentenced to probation and ordered to pay more than $60,000 restitution.

Karnik appeared Thursday before the state Board of Pardons, which voted 3-to-1 to recommend Markell grant him a pardon.

Karnik said the fraudulent Medicaid claims were an attempt to cover losses he incurred as result of his addiction to roulette. He is hoping a pardon will expand his opportunities to help others struggling with addiction.

Karnik now works for the Delaware Council of Gambling Problems.
