Troops Return Home to Delaware City

Posted:

DELAWARE CITY, Del. – Thousands gathered Saturday in Delaware City to welcome home Delaware's 153rd Military Police Company of the National Guard. The troops returned early from Afghanistan.

The homecoming happened at the Gov. Bacon Parade Field. A marching band played "God Bless America," and family and friends cheered to welcome home the troops.

There were 127 homemade posters for the celebration- one for each service member.

This was the third deployment for the military police company since 2001.

Jill Biden, the wife of Vice President Joe Biden, was at the homecoming event. She was also there when the troops left in January.

The unit was deployed to the western side of Kandahar working with the local Afghan Uniform Police. The unit was supposed to spend nine months there.

Gov. Martin O'Malley has said he may issue an executive order creating a pilot program for reforms to criminal bail procedures. It would be the next chapter in Maryland's efforts to comply with a Court of Appeals ruling that defendants have a right to legal counsel at every bail hearing. Legislators failed to agree on a solution this past session.
