WASHINGTON (AP)- The Washington Nationals officially have gone bust in 2013, failing to make the playoffs a year after leading the majors with 98 wins.

Lame-duck manager Davey Johnson did not need long to see that his "World Series or Bust" proclamation was not going to work out the way he wanted. Now as the Nationals head into the offseason - and Johnson heads into retirement - earlier than many anticipated, there are plenty of key questions, most importantly: How to replace the skipper?

General manager Mike Rizzo has avoided talking about his managerial search. Bench coach Randy Knorr is thought to be a leading candidate.

Rizzo also must fill out the back of the rotation and fix the bench after Washington went 86-76, playing well only after falling out of contention.
