ATLANTA- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks golf team finished its season opening road trip on Sunday with a six-place finish at the Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Invitational. The Hawks used a team effort to finish in the upper tier of teams at the 19-team event, where UMES shot all eight rounds under 80. The tournament held four MEAC schools and a total of 11 Division 1 programs.
Senior Michael Veverka (Brunswick, Md.) shot consecutive rounds of 73, or one-over-par, to lead UMES. With the scores, Veverka lowered his average on the season to 74.
Freshman Norman Blanco (Sunrise, Fla.) was the next golfer for UMES to place a 75, 77 in two rounds. Sophomore Jon Seward (Ft. Washington, Md.) tied Blanco with 152 strokes after consecutive 76s and senior Paul Cecil (Severn, Md.) shot a five-over-par score of 77 on day one and a 79 on day two.
The Hawks fly back to action next weekend with a spot in the Holiday Inn Colonial Classic in Pittsburgh. Last season, the Hawks outshined par-3 play to finish fifth at the event.
