Del. Gets D-Minus for Property Abandonment

DOVER, Del. – Delaware ranks poorly when it comes to unclaimed or abandoned property.

A report released Tuesday by the Council On State Taxation puts Delaware at the bottom, along with Mississippi and New York, when it comes to abandoned property.

Back in 2009, the national business group gave Delaware an "F", the only state to receive that mark.

This time around, Delaware received a D-minus. The COST group says Delaware's position as a major place of incorporation, along with its reputation for unfair and aggressive audit practices, puts the first state far below all others.

Abandoned property includes unclaimed stocks and bonds, uncashed checks, and unclaimed dividends, and is the third-largest revenue source for Delaware's general fund.
