Scalia Addresses Catholic Group in Virginia

Posted:

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP)- Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia says his alma mater Georgetown University has strayed from its Roman Catholic roots.

Thursday night, Scalia told an audience at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville that Georgetown was a "very Catholic place" when he attended the Jesuit school in the nation's capital. Now, he said Georgetown and other Catholic universities have drifted from their faith-based origins.

As for the Catholic Church, he said it has been "in trouble" for a while.

Scalia also lamented that people of faith are not more open about openly discussing their religious beliefs.

Scalia spoke at an event sponsored by the St. Anselm Institute for Catholic Thought. Scalia took questions during the one-hour address.

Scalia is a former U.Va. law professor.
