4 Sailors Face Charges in Md. Military Pond Deaths

Posted:

NORFOLK, Va. (AP)- The Navy is charging four sailors with crimes for their roles in the training accident deaths of two Navy divers in Maryland.

Navy Diver 1st Class James Reyher of Caldwell, Ohio, and Navy Diver 2nd Class Ryan Harris of Gladstone, Mo., drowned on Feb. 26 while working at the Aberdeen Proving Ground.

A spokesman for the Virginia Beach-based Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group 2 said arraignments for the sailors facing charges are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.

Lt. Nathan Potter says the specific charges the sailors face as well as their identities won't be made public until they are arraigned. Potter says a trial at Naval Station Norfolk likely wouldn't occur until November or December.

In August, five sailors were given administrative punishment for their roles in connection with the deaths.
