ATLANTA- Maryland women's basketball team named senior Alyssa Thomas to the Wade Trophy Watch List on Tuesday for the second straight year. Thomas is a two-time WBCA All-American and was added to the list mid-season as a sophomore, then as a finalist for the Wade Trophy in both her sophomore and junior seasons.
The two-time ACC Player of the Year led the conference in scoring 18.8 points per game, 10.3 rebounds per game and 5.3 assists per game. Thomas is the only player in NCAA or WNBA history to average over 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists per game for a season.
The Wade Trophy, now in its 37th year, is named in honor of the late, legendary three-time national champion Delta State University coach, Lily Margaret Wade. The trophy is regarded as the "Heisman of Women's Basketball," and is presented annually to the NCAA Division I Player of the Year by the National Association of Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS) and the WBCA.
The preseason list is composed of top NCAA Division I women's basketball players who best represent Wade's spirit from 18 individual institutions and seven conferences. Coaches, administrators and media from across the United States compile the list using the following criteria: game and season statistics, leadership, character, effect on their team and overall playing ability.
