Texting Tickets Up in Delaware

MILTON, Del.- The latest figures released by Delaware State Police send a clear message to drivers: police officers are looking for texters behind the wheel.

According to Delaware State Police, troopers have handed out 3,856 violations for cell phone violations through August of this year. The 8-month amount has already surpassed the total for 2012, when troopers gave out 3,506 violations for the year.

The texting ban went into effect in 2011. In the first year, Delaware State Police reached a total of 2,641 cell phone violations for the year.

In Delaware, the use of any handheld electronic device while driving an automobile is a primary offense. Maryland's texting ban recently became a primary offense as well.
