WILMINGTON, Del. - The state's first dual-language expeditionary learning elementary charter school is set to open next year.
Students will learning in both English and Spanish at Academia Antonia Alonso or La Academia. School leader Jesús Urdiales says that there's a huge need for this kind of school and it has been in the minds of people in the city for more than a decade.
Enrollment begins next month. La Academia will accept 300 students in kindergarten and first grades, adding a grade level each year up until fifth grade. Urdiales says students won't need to be skilled in both languages to attend, but the school will make sure are bilingual by fifth grade.
Instruction will be in English one day and in Spanish the next.
