ACCOMACK COUNTY, Va.- A Thursday morning tractor-trailer crash in Accomack County has claimed the life of a Fruitland, Md. man.

According to Virginia State Police, at around 10:33 a.m. a trooper was called to the scene of the crash on Route 13 in the 21000 block of Lankford Highway.

Police said a flatbed tractor-trailer was heading southbound on Route 13 when it ran off the right side of the highway and traveled for approximately 900 feet before striking a ditch. The impact with the ditch caused the tractor-trailer to overturn.

According to investigators, the driver, identified as 74-year-old Ernest J. Gibbons Jr., was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle. Gibbons died at the scene. He was the only occupant in the vehicle.

At this stage of the investigation, police said the cause of the crash is believed to be related to a medical condition.
