Furloughed Workers Hit the Surf in Delaware

INDIAN RIVER INLET, Del.- Warnings and advisories weren't enough to stop surfers from doing what they love, even in treacherous conditions.

At least a dozen surfers braved the waters near the Indian River Inlet, despite a high surf warning and coastal flood advisory strongly advising against it.

"It's not that bad," said Jack Collins of Arlington, Virginia.

Collins and his childhood friend Jake Covert were both surfing Friday due to the partial government shutdown. They are both federal employees who have gone more than a week without work or pay.

"This is nice, but I want to get back to work," said Collins. "It's great to clear my head and take in the area, but I want to get back."

Officials said the waves reached heights of seven feet tall in some areas off the Delaware coast.
