Some Furloughed Contractors Will Not Get Backpay

Posted: Updated:

SNOW HILL, Md.- Amy Taylor, of Snow Hill, should be busy working at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility, instead of washing dishes at home. But when Congress shut the government down, Taylor's paychecks were left in limbo.

"We're using what we had," said Taylor, "That's what we're living off of, which is not very much."

While legislation is moving forward to provide back pay for furloughed federal workers, it will do Taylor no good. That's because she works for a company contracted by NASA. Contractors unfortunately will not get back pay for the weeks of work lost during the shutdown.

"It is unfair. It is truly unfair that us contractors, and anyone honestly in the situation, are just stuck."

Taylor was one of nearly 1,000 federal contractors on the Lower Shore sent home without pay on Oct. 1, according to the National Association of Government Contractors.

"It's like they're [lawmakers are] playing a game with our lives," said Taylor. "In the process, people are going to start losing things because they will not be able to afford their cars, their homes. Most people live paycheck to paycheck and they need it."

The last government shutdown lasted 21 days. We're now on day 14. Taylor just hopes the shutdown, itself, is shut down quickly.
