Activists Against Ballpark in Old Va. Slave-Trade Center

Posted:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Activists and historians say a section of Richmond that was home to the city's slave-trading center is no place to build a ballpark.

Ballpark opponents made their case Monday at a news conference in front of City Hall. They oppose a ballpark in the city's historic Shockoe Bottom, where a lucrative commerce in enslaved Africans occurred over two centuries.

They say 300,000 to 350,000 slaves passed through the region.

They are fearful Mayor Dwight C. Jones will propose a stadium there to replace The Diamond, the home of the Richmond Squirrels. He has not publicly made that announcement.

A spokeswoman for the mayor said he would have no comment.

Opponents say the district is "sacred ground" that instead should be promoted as a heritage tourism destination for all Americans.
