Psychiatric Hospital Staffer Stabbed With Spike

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP)- Maryland State Police say a psychiatric hospital patient stabbed a staffer in the head with a spike.

As staff at the Thomas B. Finan Center in Cumberland tried to restrain the combative patient on Monday morning, police say one staffer was struck in the back of the head with a 7-inch galvanized spike.

When troopers arrived, police say the patient, 50-year-old Craig Zello of Hagerstown, confronted them but was taken into custody without incident. The spike was still lodged in the staffer's head and police say he was taken to Western Maryland Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

Zello is charged with first- and second-degree attempted murder, first- and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and possession of a dangerous weapon with intent to injure. He is being held without bond.
