Assateague Island Open after Shutdown

Berlin, Md. -Assateague Island National Seashore has reopened after the partial government shutdown.

The park closed October 1 along with other national parks across the United States.

Both the Maryland and Virginia districts are now open.

In Maryland, all parking lots are open. Developed area camping is open on a first come first served basis and backcountry camping is open. The Over Sand Vehicle zone is open to marker 24.7 because of storm damage. Hunting is also open.

The Assateague Island Visitor Center will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In Virginia, parking lot one is currently open. Lots two and three should be open by Friday afternoon. The Over Sand Vehicle zone is closed because of storm damage. The Toms Cove Visitor Center is open seven days per week through November.
