Republican Group Holds Fundraiser Against Gun Control

Updated:

MARDELA SPRINGS, Md.- In Wicomico County, one Republican group took to their guns in order to raise money against gun control. More than 100 people gathered at Delmarva Sporting Clays for a weekend fundraiser that brought in approximately $6,000 for GOP candidates.

Phil Roath of Cambridge was at the event. He shot down some clay pigeons with his shotgun. He said that the second amendment is about more than just hunting though.

"The Second Amendment is what keeps the country free," he said.

Roath said that he has a firearm for self-defense, a right he hopes to hold on to.

"The worst thing to ever happen is to need a gun and not have one," he said.

The gun control debate once again came into view in the aftermath of the Newtown shootings. But fundraiser Bill Lee from the group doing the fundraiser, The Dorcester County Republican Central Committee said the second amendment was a crucial freedom.

"Right now they just want a little bit of regulation," he said. "Then they're just gonna want just a little more. Then a little more. Until all the guns are regulated out of existence."

But others such as Latesha Gilliam said that they are not convinced all regulations are bad. She said some must be included in order to limit the amount of mass-killings.

"I don't want to get rid of them," she said. "I just think that we just need to control them. I think that if we have more control of a lot of things in this world then we would be safer."
