Capital School District Wins Parking Space Request

DOVER, Del. - The Dover Planning Commission granted the Capital School District's request to reduce the number of required parking spaces for the new Dover High School if necessary.

The approved site plan showed plans for 1009 total parking spaces. The revised plan provides 734 spaces. Capital School District Superintendent Dr. Michael Thomas says they have every intention to build all of the planned parking spaces. They want the flexibility in case anything surprises were to happen.

"At the end of the day we hope to have about a 1000 spaces but we certainly as a precaution note there's a process you have to go through city planning," said Dr. Thomas. "The waiver will allow us to if we want to go from 734 to that 1000 limit.

The City of Dover questions what will happen if they had fewer parking spaces and people started parking in the surrounding neighborhoods.

"You will have more people for baseball, softball games than you would have parking," said Ann Marie Townshed with the City of Dover. "It's that the parking in the neighborhood is going to be closer to those fields than the parking in the west side of the site."
