Va. Slaying Suspect Mistakenly Freed From Jail

Posted:

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP)- A slaying suspect mistakenly released from the Newport News City Jail says he told deputies that he wasn't supposed to be freed.

A judge ordered Eric Dixon's release on a misdemeanor assault charge on Oct. 9. Dixon says that he told the deputies he also faces a murder charge in Hampton.

Dixon was 17 when he was charged in Hampton this summer. He was held at a juvenile facility in Newport News until he turned 18 in September and a judge ordered his transfer to the Hampton jail.

Media outlets say the Hampton jail wouldn't accept Dixon because of a paperwork problem.

Dixon was taken to the Newport News Jail instead because of the assault charge.

Dixon's mother returned him to Hampton authorities after he was released.
