Man Charged With Shooting Police Officer

Posted:

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (AP)- Howard County police say a man has been charged with attempted murder in the shooting of an officer in Laurel.

Twenty-nine-year-old Stephon Prather was also charged Friday with assault, reckless endangerment and gun offenses. He is being held without bond.

It could not be immediately determined if Prather has an attorney.

Prather is accused of shooting 30-year-old Officer Steven Houk Wednesday when Houk and two other officers confronted him outside a car dealership. Police say Prather shot at the officers, who returned fire.

Police say Prather was found Thursday morning walking on Route 1. He was treated for a gunshot wound to his leg.

Houk remains in serious but stable condition at Shock Trauma in Baltimore.
