Three Injured in Lewes Crash

Posted: Updated:

LEWES, Del.-  Delaware State Police are investigating a three-vehicle crash on Route 1 in Lewes that left three people injured, including one in critical condition.

Troopers said the accident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. Friday as 52-year-old Kevin Smith of Harbeson traveled south on Route 1 in a 2004 Buick Rendezvous. Police said that for an undetermined reason, the vehicle crossed the median and entered the northbound lanes, striking a 1997 Saturn SL that was merging onto Route 1 from Dartmouth Road.

Immediately after the vehicles collided, investigators said the Saturn was struck by a northbound 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo that had been traveling behind it.

Police said Smith was not injured, but was transported to Beebe Hospital and admitted for treatment of a medical condition that was not caused by the crash.

The driver of the Saturn, 51-year-old Stanley Mutter of Milford, was transported by ambulance to Beebe Hospital, and then flown to Christiana Hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition.

The driver of the Chevrolet, 46-year-old Lorena Vanegas of Georgetown, and her passenger, 11-year-old Reyna Gil-Vanegas, were both transported by ambulance to Beebe Hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries and released.

The DSP Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing its investigation into this crash, and no charges have been filed. The northbound lanes of Route 1 were closed for approximately two-and-a-half hours as Troopers investigated and cleared the crash.
