Clinton Stumps for McAuliffe at Packed Restaurant

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Former President Bill Clinton made an impromptu stop at a suburban Richmond restaurant to promote Democrat Terry McAuliffe's bid for governor.

Clinton stopped for nearly an hour Sunday at the Red Lobster, shaking hands, stopping in the kitchen, kissing babies and sharing a basket of biscuits with two diners as he encouraged customers to vote for McAuliffe next month.

A hostess collected the signatures of Clinton and McAuliffe on the back of her shirt. She said she would save the shirt as a memento and vote for McAuliffe on Nov. 5.

Clinton displayed his usual zest for campaigning, stopping at every booth in the restaurant. He also posed for dozens of cellphone photos with adoring fans.

Clinton did not take reporters' questions at the stop.
