PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (AP/WBOC)- A former Crisfield police chief who's previously been charged with arson and theft will serve a year in jail for theft, property destruction and a gun offense.

Norman Swift III, 58, pleaded guilty to the charges this week. He was arrested Sept. 16 and found with a .22-caliber handgun and a rifle in his truck after police got a call about a suspicious person at an auto body shop on Jacksonville Road. Swift was barred from possessing firearms. Police later searched Swift's home and found another gun and stolen power tools.

Swift received a 7 ½-year sentence with all but one year suspended. He previously served prison time for theft.

He resigned as Crisfield's police chief in 1990 after he was charged with starting a fire in downtown Crisfield three years earlier.
