DOVER, Del. – Despite a 3-2 overtime loss to No. 8 Salisbury University, the Wesley College field hockey team clinched the fifth spot in the Capital Athletic Conference Playoffs. The Wolverines (8-10, 1-5 CAC) will travel to face fourth-seeded St. Mary's (10-5, 3-3 CAC) on Sunday, November 3.
Wesley battled back to tie the game after falling behind 2-0 with 17:33 left in regulation. Gracie Daniels tallied both Wolverines goals as she tipped in a pass from Lauren Mears at 60:16. Exactly seven minutes later, Mears fired a shot which was saved, but the ball came right to Renee Schneider who deflected it to Daniels for the score.
Salisbury was awarded a corner at the end of regulation but Brooke Gannon was there for her third defensive save of the game, halting the shot by Mallory Elliott. Elliot however was cedited with the game-winner just 93 seconds into overtime as her shot from the left wing deflected off a Wesley defender and past goalkeeper Sarah Daniels.
Daniels was credited with 11 saves in the loss while Rachel Clewer stopped three shots for the Sea Gulls.
