Mysterious Boat Drifts Ashore on Eerie Halloween Morning

Posted:

BERLIN, Md.- It was a foggy morning when a mysterious house boat drifted to shore on the Assateague National Seashore. Onlookers tell WBOC, the eerie sight gave them the chills.

Sounds like a ghost tale. But some visitors were actually treated to a rare sight of a 'ghost ship,' and to add to the mystery, it washed ashore early Halloween morning.

"It's kind of a neat coincidence that the morning it came ashore here, it was drowned in fog," said Chief Park Ranger Ted Murlock, of Assateague National Seashore. "The visitors, who first came upon it, got quite the experience and a little bit of chill from that."

With curtains still attached, and pieces of the badly battered boat flapping in the wind, the ghost ship was spotted on the south end of the island.

"Well, folks weren't quite sure what to think of it," said Murlock. "Obviously a vessel had come to shore, so they were kind of spooked by it."

In a part of Delmarva where legends and myths have often been furnished by the sea, the mystery of the ghost boat soon provoked curious speculation.

But it is believed the vessel broke away from a towing boat after it became dismantled in rough sea conditions.

"It's an eye shore," said Murlock. "It gets in the way of the fishermen. It just doesn't belong here."

The owner will have to either salvage it, tow it off the beach or dismantle it. With the new moon just around the corner, rangers worry the voyage of this ghost boat may not come to an end, if the high tide pulls it back out.
