Baratt's Chapel 228th Anniversary Service

Posted:

FREDERICA, Del.- Barratt's Chapel will hold its annual Anniversary Service at 4 p.m. pm Sunday, Nov. 10. The featured speaker will be Dover native Rev. Dr. Shirlyn Brown, Director of Connectional Ministries for the Peninsula-Delaware Conference of The United Methodist Church. The service commemorates the 228th anniversary of the meeting at Barratt's Chapel on November 14, 1784, of Francis Asbury and Thomas Coke, at which the sacraments were first celebrated by Methodists and plans were laid for Methodists to become and independent church.

Barratt's Chapel is located on Route 1 just north of Frederica. For more information, call (302) 335-5544.

Barratt's Chapel stands as the oldest surviving church in the United States built by Methodists. It is on the National Register of Historic Places, and is a Heritage Landmark of The United Methodist Church. Because of the historic events of 1784 Barratt's Chapel is rightly known both as "The Independence Hall of American Methodism" and "The Cradle of American Methodism."
