DOVER, Del.- The Delaware State University Hornets are looking forward to their 2013-14 season starting at home against Cairn University.
Delaware State basketball tips off their 2013-14 season at home against Cairn University. The game will count for the Hornets, but will serve as an exhibition for the Highlanders. DSU has nine players returning, including three starters from its 2012-13 squad who post a 15-18 overall record. The Hornets were eighth in the final 2012-13 MEAC regular season standings with an 8-8 mark in league play. Returning starts are senior forward Casey Walker, junior center Kendall Gray and senior point guard A.J. Thomas. Walker is the Hornets' top returning scorer with 8.6 points per game during last season. Walker starts his senior year with 1,071 points at DSU. Gray averaged 5.5 points per game and set a school record with 75 blocks last season. He ranked second in the MEAC conference and 20th among all NCAA Div. I players in blocks during the 2012-13 season (2.6 pg.) The Hornets' 2013-14 roster features nine newcomers, three junior college transfers and the team's first Serbian player.
As a member of the Div. III Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC,) Cairn struggled to a 3-23 record with two forfeit victories during the 2012-13 season. Eight of the 12 players on this year's squad are freshman or sophomores. Top returning players include junior guard Charles Hopkins and sophomore forward Reuben Lacy. Hopkins averaged 10.7 points per game and Lacy averaged 10.0 points. Lacy posted a team-high 7.9 rebounds per game and was third in the CSAC in rebounding last season.
The Hornets lead the DSU vs. Cairn series 3-0. This will be the fourth meeting between the Hornets and the Highlanders. Delaware State won the previous three meetings with a combined score of 302-128. The Hornets won last year's game 95-46. DSU had 24 assists on 39 field goals in the game. Fourteen players scored at least three points for the Hornets. DSU won the 2011 game with a score of 103-41 and won in 2010 with a score of 104-41.
