Pack to Give Back: Elect to End Hunger

SALISBURY, Md. - Dozens of volunteers gathered at the Maryland Food Bank in Salisbury on Thursday to participate in the Eastern Shore's second annual Pack to Give Back event.  The volunteers were packing boxes of holiday food for families on the Eastern Shore in need this holiday season.

"We have 42,000 people here on the Eastern Shore who have no idea where their next meal is coming from," said Jennifer Small, the Managing Director of the Maryland Food Bank Eastern Shore.

Volunteers formed an assembly line to pack the nearly 2,000 boxes of food as quickly as possible.  The boxes, filled with things such as cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and brownies, will be coupled with turkeys and delivered to families who need them the most.

Volunteers packed 400 more boxes this year than last year and officials at the food bank expect that number to continue to grow.

"We are up 400 boxes from over last year.  We packed 1,400 last year and this year we are packing 1,800 boxes and I envision that the program is going to continue to grow and we are going to see a surplus every year," said Small.

So as the number of families in need continues to grow, the need to donations and volunteers will be on the rise as well.
