November is Most Dangerous Month for Deer-Related Crashes

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, Del.- With deer in mating season and the sun setting earlier, November is the most dangerous month for deer-vehicle collisions.

"In Sussex County we see deer collisions all year round but this time of year we probably see two or three a week," said Richard Paul with 1st State Chevrolet.

Paul will see many of the hundreds of cars that are hit in Delaware by deer this year, and repairs are not always cheap.

"It can come from minor damage as little as a couple hundred dollars, to we've actually seen total loss because of deer collisions," he said.

The most expensive damage doesn't always come from the impact of the deer. "Some people swerve to miss a deer or they'll hit a deer and run off the road to hit a pole unfortunately and that causes more damage than a deer does," and Paul doesn't just fix the cars hit by deer's he's been a victim too.

"Coming home from football practice for my son and a deer run out from a cornfield and right in the front end and there's nothing you can do about it," he said. "Couldn't stop, couldn't swerve, it was just all over."

If you do see a deer on the side of the road there are probably more in the area and drivers need to look out.

"Slow down, try to stop on the road, stay on the road," he said. "Never swerve to miss a deer, I mean that's personal opinion, never swerve to miss a deer. Trees and poles do more damage than deer do."
