Fatal Accident Involving a State Trooper in Berlin

BERLIN, Md. – Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal accident involving a trooper.

Authorities said the crash occurred after two teenaged brothers crossed a highway on foot into the path of an oncoming trooper's patrol car.

One teenager was transported by ambulance to Atlantic General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.  His brother was transported at Peninsula Regional Medical Center prior to being transferred by air to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center for treatment.

The trooper is identified as Trooper Nicholas Hager, 21, a 1-year veteran assigned to the Berlin Barrack.  He was treated at Atlantic General Hospital for injuries sustained during the crash.

Preliminary investigation shows that around 8:00 p.m. on Friday night, a state trooper was on routine patrol in his unmarked patrol car.

Investigators said the trooper was headed northbound on Rt. 113 approaching Bay Street.  For reasons unknown at this time, the two brothers crossed Rt. 113 from east to west, in the area of Bay Street.  According to police, they ran directly into the path of the approaching patrol car.

Authorities said the trooper attempted to take evasive action, but was unable to avoid hitting the teens.  He immediately called for emergency medical services and began to provide emergency care to both teens.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team will continue to investigate the fatal accident.
