Va. Based Group Sends Help to Philippines

Posted:

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - A Virginia Beach humanitarian group is shipping water purification devices to the typhoon-ravaged Philippines.

Operation Blessing International says 40 staff members from its unit based in the Philippines are helping with disaster relief in multiple locations. The teams will be involved in clearing operations so that workers and supplies can be brought into the hardest-hit areas.

The devices being sent from its Chesapeake warehouse include a chlorine generator used to disinfect more than 300,000 gallons of water each day, along with five smaller, portable units that run off car batteries.

Authorities said at least 2 million people in 41 provinces were affected by the powerful typhoon that hit Friday. Hundreds have been confirmed dead.
