Shore-Up's Heating Assistance Delayed For Thousands

Posted:

SALISBURY, Md.- The number of calls heat up as temps cool down, and case workers at Shore-Up! are busy attending to thousands of people applying for governmental heating assistance.

"We have to come every year," said Juanita Thompson. "Because we need help."

Thompson lives in an older home, where insulation is a problem. So days in the blistering cold, she said are unbearable.

"You could turn the heat up high as you want it and it don't do the job," Thompson said.

Cranking the heat could crank up your utility bill, sending it through the roof. With little to no extra cash, Thompson may be without heat for several more weeks before her assistance kicks in.

"We are not going to have our money for heating assistance unfortunately from the state until December," said Shore Up! spokesperson Alicia Robinson. Which is a month later than last year's. Robinson places most of the blame on a technical glitch.

"We have no control over when we get the money," she said. "We wish we can get it sooner."

So the sooner state officials cut a check, the sooner people like Thompson will get the help they need, according to Robinson.

"I can't imagine the people with no insulation," said Thompson. "My heart goes out to them."

So far, more than 5,000 people from Wicomico, Somerset and Worcester counties have applied for heating assistance this year, according to Shore Up. Officials expect those numbers to climb as temperatures dive into the start of winter.
