MIDDLETOWN, Del. – Delaware State Police say a traffic stop turned into a drug seizure of cocaine and heroin, potentially worth $250,000.

Police say it happened just before 2 p.m. Thursday on Route 1, south of Middletown Odessa Road.

A trooper pulled over Javona Smith, 35, of Chesapeake, VA, and her passenger Sherita Nicks, 40, of New York, NY, after police say the 2013 Toyota Corolla they were in was moving too closely to the car in front of them, and changed lanes without using a signal.

Police say the trooper approached the car, talked to Smith, and detected the smell of burnt marijuana. Smith then gave the trooper paperwork that showed the car was a rental and not authorized to leave Virginia.

Police say they then searched the car and found 170 grams of cocaine and 515 grams of heroin concealed in a plastic bag under a jacket in the trunk. Detectives say the drugs are worth almost $70,000, and once packaged could have potentially been worth $250,000.

Smith and Nicks were taken into custody and charged with possession of a controlled substance and second-degree conspiracy.

Both were taken to Baylor Women's Correctional Institute on secured bail. Troopers say the odor was result of Smith smoking marijuana shortly before driving.
