GEORGETOWN, Del.- Delaware State Police say they are conducting a death investigation into the apparent suicide of a 15-year-old female student that occurred at Sussex Technical High School late Friday morning.

Police said the incident occurred at approximately 11 a.m. as a Sussex Tech staff member discovered the 15-year-old unresponsive inside of a restroom located on the first floor cafeteria area of the high school. The staff member alerted other school staff of the situation and medical aid including CPR was administered to the student, according to investigators.

The student was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police said a preliminary investigation has determined that this incident has been classified as an apparent suicide and continues to be an ongoing investigation. Troopers are working in coordination with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause and manner of death. The name of the student has not been released.

Police said detectives continue their investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding this incident. While Sussex Tech remained on a low-level lockdown during the continued investigation, investigators said there were no threats to the safety of the students or faculty during this incident. No weapons were utilized in this incident, police added.

In a statement released following the incident, Sussex Technical School District officials said, "The Sussex Technical School District is heartbroken over the tragic loss of one of our students. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to the family members and friends of those involved. At this very difficult time, our focus is on providing counseling and support to our students and staff.  School, district, and state-level resources were on-site today and will continue to be available to provide counseling and support to our entire Sussex Tech family."
