Va. Christmas Tree Growers Pleased With Trees

Posted: Updated:

STAUNTON, Va. (AP) - Heavy rains in late spring and early summer will deliver a bountiful crop of Christmas trees this holiday season.

Virginia tree growers say those rains came at just the right time.

Pines grow new needles in April and May, while the spruce push out new growth alongside older branches.

Greg Lemmer is president of the Virginia Christmas Tree Growers Association. He expects to have plenty of lush Norway spruce and firs this season.

Bill Francisco says he's noticed the same "bushier and fuller" quality in the white pines, blue spruces and Fraser firs he grows at his farm near Greenville.
