SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP)- Virginia governor-elect Terry McAuliffe has paid a visit to his upstate New York hometown to help his mother celebrate her 92nd birthday.

Local media outlets report that McAuliffe spent two hours Sunday at the Syracuse restaurant where a birthday party was held for his mother Millie.

McAuliffe, a Democrat, defeated Republican Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli in the race for governor of Virginia earlier this month. He'll be sworn in as governor in January.

The 56-year-0old McAuliffe grew up on Syracuse's west side. He went on to become a close friend of Bill and Hillary Clinton, a top Democratic Party fundraiser and a former leader of the national party.
