SMYRNA, Del.- Painted Stave Distillery will have its "official" grand opening Jan. 10, but its owners are giving people a taste of what's to come with a soft opening.

Starting Nov. 8, the owners began opening their doors to people Friday thru Sunday for tours, tasting and sales so they could get people talking about the only distillery in the state of Delaware.

"We produce on site, handmade craft spirits," said one of the owners, Michael Rasmussen. "So vodka and gin are the first two products that we have released and we're working on a number of whiskeys and plans to do brandys and liquors all based on local agriculture."

Rasmussen and his partner Ron Gomes have been working for years trying to get the distillery up and running.

"Just over two years ago we came to Smyrna got a chance to actually tour this building, meet lots of people in the town and at that point really committed that we wanted to make this business happen," said Rasmussen.

Officials say they hope that the distillery will hope to attract more people to the town of Smyrna.

"We want not only to have product around the state but we hope to create a destination here that brings people to Smyrna to check out our distillery and hopefully then spend some time in Smyrna and see why we like it so much."

The owners plan on having an entire grand opening celebration weekend starting January 10th to officially open its doors to the public.

For now, Painted Stave Distillery is open Friday through Sundays.
