'Selfies While Driving' Causing Concern on the Road

Posted: Updated:

SNOW HILL, Md.- Just when texting while driving has been firmly seated in the position of the most dangerous driving distraction, "Selfies While Driving" has taken the wheel.

"It's crazy, I used to see people reading the newspaper while they were driving," said Todd Crospy, of Snow Hill.

Authorities have spotted drivers snapping photos of themselves. Those photos are called "selfies." Some drivers post them the web while cruising down the road.

"I don't care what it's a photo of," said Cospy. "There's nothing on this planet that's that interesting, that is worth risking your life and the people's life around you."

Those self-portrait artists aren't shy about sharing their photos. Instagram shows close to 4,000 pictures under the #drivingselfie category. Ironically some drivers tag their selfies with #ihopeidontcrash.

Worcester County Sheriff's Office warn the seconds you use to post a picture could be deadly.

"You could be riding down the road, then all of a sudden, out of the corner of your eye, you catch a glimpse of a deer or small child," said Lt. Neil Adam. "And it's there before you know it."

More than 3,300 deaths, every year, are caused by distracted driving, according to the Department of Transportation.

"It's not worth it," said Crospy. "You might get a great snap shot. But it's not going to be enough to keep you entertained when you are laying in the hospital."
