Va. Board of Ed OKs Letter-based Grading System

RICHMOND, Va. (AP)- Virginia education officials will soon use a letter-based system to grade the state's public schools.

Gov. Bob McDonnell said Thursday that the Virginia Board of Education unanimously approved the new A-to-F grading system.

Officials say the new system will assign letter grades to schools based on the percentages of students demonstrating proficiency, academic growth and college and career readiness.

The first letter grades will be announced at the 2014-2015 school year and will accompany school accreditation ratings.

McDonnell had proposed letter-based grading system as part of his 2013 education agenda.

Secretary of Education Javaid Siddiqi says the move strikes a balance between maintaining high expectations for all children and recognizing the successes of schools that serve students who face significant challenges.
