Young Lady Hawks Look to Build From 2013 Season

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – On Nov. 10, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team ended their 2013 campaign against the eventual 2013 Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference Champions, Hampton University, at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. The team finished the season 3-21 overall (2-10 MEAC).

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

UMES had numerous highlights during the 2013 season, including extraordinary team & individual performances and multiple Lady Hawks earning MEAC honors. Among the several highlights included UMES picking up their first victory of the season against Bethune-Cookman University at the Norfolk State University Spartan Invitational (9/14/13). The Lady Hawks swept the Wildcats, 3-0, which Bethune-Cookman finished the season third in the MEAC South Division.

On Sept. 27, another highlight was the team defeating Delaware State University, 3-1, to pick up their first conference win of the season and extended their home-winning streak to 31 matches, the longest in the nation at the time. In the process, the Lady Hawks also picked up their 35th consecutive regular-season home-match victory against conference opponents, dating back to 2006. In the rematch against the Hornets (10/20/13), UMES erased a 2-1 match deficit to comeback and defeat Delaware State in five sets, 3-2, and swept the season series against the Hornets. Delaware State led late in the fourth set, 20- 16, and on the verge of taking the match. With the match on the line, the resilient Lady Hawks refused to give up and came back to win the fourth set, 25-21, and then sealed the comeback in the fifth set, 16-14.

LAST HURRAH Lone senior Jingqiao Li (Beijing, China) played her final collegiate season for the Lady Hawks, which became a memorable one. This season, Li earned two All-Tournament Team honors while setting new career-highs, including 39 digs against conference rival, Morgan State (10/31/13). The two-time MEAC Champion finished second in the MEAC, averaging 4.58 digs-per-set. On Nov. 14th, Li earned two MEAC honors: All-Academic & All-MEAC Third Team.
