Woman Charged With Stealing $5.1M From Nonprofit

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AP)- A woman known for donating gowns from her Upper Marlboro bridal shop to military brides is charged with stealing $5.1 million in a case thought to be one of the largest embezzlements from an area nonprofit group.

Ephonia Green is set to appear Monday at a plea hearing in U.S. District Court in Washington. Green is charged with embezzling from the Association of American Medical colleges while working as an administrative assistant. Court files show nearly $1.4 million was paid through checks to Green's Couture Miss Bridal & Formal.

A court document states Green opened bank accounts in names that closely resembled legitimate vendors, but the alleged plot was discovered when a bank withheld payment on a $113,000 check and notified the association.
