RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell is preparing to leave office after a four-year term that saw his rising national profile fade under the cloud of a federal investigation.

McDonnell, once mentioned as a possible vice presidential pick, is leaving in January because of term limits.

He told The Associated Press in an interview that he has no plans to seek another office but that he expects to remain engaged in policies he cares about. He says he's proud of his record, including that on education, transportation and budget issues.

Prosecutors are investigating whether he and his wife, Maureen, gave special treatment to a dietary supplement-maker whose chief executive gave the couple luxury gifts. McDonnell repeated in the interview that he'd done nothing illegal but said he'd make different decisions now.
