Local Businesses Ready for Small Business Saturday

Posted:

DOVER, Del. (WBOC) - While people flooded into malls and big box stores across Delmarva Thursday into Friday, the region's small businesses prepped for their big day coming up.

The quiet of State Street in downtown Dover Friday morning seemed a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of the Dover Mall actually just three miles away.

On the corner of State and The Green is the recently opened Parke Green Galleries. It's an artist co-op. Jan Crumpley is one of the artists.

She says it's really important for people to consider shopping local during the holiday season.

"When you shop at a local business, they money goes further in the community. If you shop a big corporation, the money goes to wherever - Little Rock, Chicago, Beijing."

Shopping local is exactly what Linda Bourey was doing Friday morning.

"We don't like to Black Friday shop at the mall," she said. "We came in [to Parke Green Galleries] instead. It's been a wonderful experience.

It's not just Friday shoppers businesses, like Parke Green Galleries, have their eyes on. It's Saturday one, too.

Small Business Saturday has been around since 2010. It's a push sponsored by American Express to get people to shop local, shop small.

Shops across downtown Dover are going to be open Saturday. American Express estimates last year Small Business Saturday shoppers spent $5.5 billion nationwide. There are no Delaware specific numbers on how successful the day has been in the past. But there is anecdotal evidence.

Just ask Lucy Findlay at Partners in Design on Loockerman Street.

"Last year's Small Business Saturday was the single best day our shop has ever had," she said.

Findlay is looking for an equally strong, if not better, Saturday this year.

And Crumpley wants good first showing for her shop's inaugural foray in Small Business Saturday.

"We just hope that people come out and see, not just us," Crumpley said. "But all the downtown shops, see what local people have to offer."
