Cambridge Businesses Tackle Cyber Monday

Posted:

Cambridge, Md.- Cyber Monday may be a shopping holiday geared towards online retailers, but Cambridge's small businesses are advertising storefronts.

Many business owners are taking to Facebook to advertise deals in-store.  One of those people is Heidi Griebel, owner of the Sunnyside Shop, who has been using Facebook for her shop for years, especially during the holiday season.

"So every day first thing in the morning,I post a deal which I think is substantial to try and get people to come in and take advantage of it.  Today for example I have 25 percent off all the bags, purses, totes, and wallets in the shop" said Griebel.

Just down the street, "Heart of Dorchester Antiques", a new store, is going into their first Cyber Monday, using Facebook in a similar way to Sunnyside.

"We have a lot of pictures on facebook of things we have on sale.  And we've extended our black friday deals through Cyber Monday" said Deborah Jackson, co-owner of the store.

Jackson says Cyber Monday shouldn't just be about the big retailers.

"I think cyber-wise, it's all competitive.  We can all do it.  Small businesses need to do it too." said Jackson.

In the Country Side Gallery, owner Karen Fishell was an early adopter of online retail.  She got on Ebay in 1997 with the help of her children.  Today, that online element has grown.

"I sell 60 percent of my inventory on the Internet." said Fishell.

Despite that, she's not participating in Cyber Monday, but after hearing the news about how successful it was, she has decided to start the tradition next year.

"I sell on the Internet all the time, and I thought why am I not promoting this holiday, so next year I'm gonna promote it and do it double." said Fishell.

Many businesses in Cambridge, like Sunnyside and Heart of Dorchester say those sales will continue through the week, and in some cases, through the entire month.
