LEXINGTON, Va. (AP/WBOC) - Washington & Lee University says a traffic accident has killed one student and injured nine others.

President Kenneth P. Ruscio said in a statement posted on the school's website that Kelsey Durkin, 21, of New Canaan died in a single-vehicle accident Tuesday in Rockbridge County.

"There are no words to express the grief we feel over the loss of someone taken from us so suddenly and tragically," Ruscio said. "In the days ahead, in the weeks and months ahead, our sadness will be lessened only by the memories of her time with us."

According to police, ten students were in the 2006 Chevy Tahoe when it veered off a winding road, hit a tree stump and overturned.

Ruscio said six students were treated at a hospital in Lexington and released. Three students were transported from the Lexington hospital to other area hospitals.

Virginia State Police tell media outlets that the vehicle's driver was treated for minor injuries, and charged with driving under the influence.
