Ocean City Park Boarded up to Keep Homeless Out

OCEAN CITY, Md.- Some people would pay big bucks to live on the beach in ocean city. An Ocean City man who goes by name "Bicycle Bob" doesn't pay a dime.

"This is where I stay because my Social Security check hasn't come in yet," said Bob, as he gave WBOC a tour of his makeshift home in Sunset Park. "I'm 62-years-old and I'm trying to make it until that [check] comes in."

But don't you dare call him homeless, because Bob said he has a "cozy" little home, that could soon change.

The town has boarded up and forced out those who were living beneath the park's piers after receiving several complaints. According to the complaints, a group of homeless people were leaving beer cans and trash everywhere and stealing electricity. Outlets, which the town uses to power up Christmas lights, were being used illegally to power up cellphones and space heaters.

Police said people will still be able to live in the park, just not under the piers.

"It's really not a safe place for anyone to be under because the tides I could rise, they could be trapped," said Ocean City police spokeswoman Lindsay O'Neal.

The resort's homeless population spikes during the winter, according to town officials. Jobs and a place to stay usually dry up, so many people like Bob live out on the streets.

"It can be tough," said Bob. "There's no help right now. So what else can you do?"

Bob does not live underneath the pier, but he does live in the park. So he worries he, too, will be asked to leave. But as for now, he is happy to call Sunset Park home.
