Ahead of Delaware Day Building that Sits on Site of Historic Golden Fleece Once Again Occupied

Saturday is Dec. 7. And in Delaware Dec. 7 is not just a day that will live in infamy, but also the day (154 years before the attack on Pearl Harbor) when Delaware became the first state by ratifying the Constitution.

Historical interpreter Dennis Fisher says it was in the Golden Fleece Tavern that delegates ratified the Constitution.

He says government holding meetings in bars was common in the 1700s.

"Our legislature met in taverns for 14 years here in Dover until the Old Statehouse was built," said Fisher. "None of the public buildings here had room for large meetings. But the taverns did."

The Golden Fleece did. It used to stand on State Street.

"The actual tavern was burned down around 1830," Fisher said. "The historic building is gone. So, only the site is historical."

He says that explains why the building isn't part of First State Heritage Park. Plaques are the only indication of what happened at the site.

And an unrelated bar carries on the Golden Fleece name a few blocks away on Loockerman Street.

For a few years the building that is on the historic site sat vacant. Jan Crumpley and Parke Green Galleries changed that.

"We wanted to put in a gallery," she said. "That's just the sort of thing they were looking for. We really fit the bill."

The store opened last month. Crumpley says the location is really cool.

"This is where America began in many ways," said Crumpley. "Tourists sometimes come in. They want to say, 'I was in the place where it happened.'"

Crumpley is glad her store can now fill this space. And Fisher says it's nice to see something in here, especially on Delaware Day.
