MILTON, Del.- Milton police say a New Jersey man who stabbed his ex-girlfriend multiple times earlier this year will spend a total of 29 years behind bars for the crime.

Police said that on Friday, Tyrone Majette was sentenced for the following charges in which he pleaded guilty:

  • First-degree assault: 25 years in prison
  • Possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony: two years in prison
  • Assault in a detention facility: two years in prison

Police said that because Majette is a "habitual offender," he will be required to serve the entire 29-year sentence in prison.

Last week's sentencing stemmed from a stabbing that occurred Jan. 24 in Milton. According to police, Majette, of Jersey City, N.J., entered his ex-girlfriend's place of work and got into an argument with her over money.

Authorities said the argument turned physical and Majette, who was 42-years-old at the time of the incident- punched the 26-year-old victim in the head, knocking her down to the ground. Police said that while the victim was on the ground bleeding from the head, Majette fled into a nearby shed and armed himself with a 10-inch knife.

The victim, who reportedly attempted to escape, ran off to a nearby vehicle on Union Street where she got into the backseat. However, police said Majette was able to get into the front seat of the vehicle and began stabbing the victim multiple times in the torso and neck region.

The victim underwent emergency surgery and was said to be recovering from her injuries.

Police located Majette and took him into custody, initially on first-degree attempted murder and related charges.

The incident prompted the nearby H.O. Brittingham Elementary School to be placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure.
