Va. Death-Row Inmate Gets Small Victory in Appeal

Posted:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Virginia death row inmate convicted of killing four people in Norfolk is getting a small victory in his appeal.

Anthony Juniper was sentenced to death for the 2004 murders of ex-girlfriend Keisha Stevens, her two children and her brother, Ruben Harrison III.

The Virginian-Pilot reports (http://bit.ly/1bUEzZb) that the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond ruled Tuesday that Juniper is entitled to appointment of a new lawyer to review his claim that he was denied effective representation at trial. A federal judge in March had rejected that claim made in a federal habeas petition.

Juniper came within one day of being executed in 2011 when a judge stayed the execution to allow him to pursue federal appeals.
