New Chief at Capitol Police Department

DOVER, Del.- There's a new chief in town. John Horsman officially took over as the new chief of the Capitol Police Department Tuesday morning.

"It's very exciting but it's a little daunting," said Horsman. "I'm actually humbled by the fact that I get to serve both the citizens of Delaware and I get to impact the lives of the people that work for Delaware Capitol Police."

He took over the position after a Change of Command Ceremony at Legislative Hall.

In the past year, people have started looking differently at the jobs capitol police officers have to do. Capitol police guard state buildings and county courthouse. In February, there was a shooting at the New Castle County Courthouse. Since then there's been a renewed focus on safety at state and county buildings as well as the duties that the officers that protect these buildings have to undergo.

"As tragic as that event was, we were proud of the fact that our officers responded to that threat," said Horsman. "The officers at Delaware capitol, we probably share the same threats that a police officer anywhere else in the state would have."

Horsman has been with the department for nearly 10 years now and is only the third person to hold the position of the Capitol Police Chief.
